Puspakom vehicle inspection system to be reviewed

TAWAU: The vehicle inspection system implemented by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) will be reviewed for the benefit of all including concession holder Puspakom Sdn Bhd, Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said.

“A review of the system is important so that the weaknesses can be rectified for the good of everyone particularly vehicle owners,” he told reporters after a dialogue session with transport operators here yesterday.

On the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) raid on Puspakom recently, Ong said over 50 Puspakom staff had been detained.

The staff were said to have allowed vehicles to be approved without going through the complete checks as required.

Ong had also said that commercial vehicles which were inspected by corrupted Puspakom personnel should be retested.

The minister is also toying with the idea of ending Puspakom’s monopoly on inspection of vehicles.

“I hope Puspakom staff will do their job professionally and in accordance with the guideline given.”

He urged the Tawau Taxi Asso-ciation to write to the Road Transport Department (RTD) as the operators need not pay to change the “ST” plate to “H” and should claim the RM50-RM75 paid from Puspakom.
