RESIDENTS and motorists are relieved that Halaman Bukit Gambir off Jalan Bukit Gambir near the entrance to Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang is now a one-way street.
A check showed that traffic flow was smooth when the new system was implemented yesterday morning.
A resident, Mohd Hazlan Harun, 29 said that previously, the half-kilometre stretch was almost impassable during morning and after office rush hours.
The road, he added, ended at a traffic light junction, and was constantly choked with vehicles waiting for the light to turn green.
Lorry driver Mohd Nazri Sharif, 35, said some errant motorists would park their vehicles along the roadside, often causing a jam.
“Turning the road into a one–way street will provide more parking space, “ he said.
Azhari Johari, 24, concurred that traffic flow was much better now. A trader, who wished to be identified only as Teoh, lauded the move to turn the road into a one-way street.
“It used to be chaotic, especially in the evening hour rush,” she added.
