THE Peninsular Malaysia Road Transport Officers Union had proposed that Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers be given the power to arrest traffic offenders, Tamil Nesan reported.
Its president Hamzah Masri said the union had conveyed the suggestion to Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat.
He said that with the power to arrest, JPJ officers would be able to work more effectively with the police in nabbing traffic offenders, particularly those who drink and drive, or drive recklessly.
He added that this would help to prevent crimes at an early stage.
He said that currently under the Road Transport Act, only the police and the city traffic warden had the power to arrest.http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?fi ... sec=nation
