KUALA LUMPUR: Highway concession companies have prepared emergency response teams along the North-South and East-Coast highways for the Hari Raya festive season, while the Fire and Rescue Department will deploy 9,800 operational personnel.

Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said there would be 12 teams along the North-South highway and three along the East-Coast highway.

He said the teams would attend to emergency cases, especially accidents.

Up to 1.4 million vehicles are expected on highways and federal roads from Sept 24 to Oct 9.

“Highway operators have come out with travel time advisories, and I hope motorists will follow them,” he said after launching the Selamat diJalan road safety campaign by PLUS at the Sungai Besi toll plaza.

“I have also ordered the Works Department to stop all road work to ensure smooth traffic flow.”

Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Hamzah Abu Bakar said the 9,800 operational personnel from 248 fire stations nationwide would maintain three-hourly patrols and watch out for road accidents and fires.

It will also have emergency response teams on standby at 13 rest and recreation stops along the North-South Expressway and two along the East Coast Expressway.

“The operations management centre in Putrajaya and all state operations centres will work round-the-clock from Sept 24,” he told reporters before inspecting preparations at the Tapah toll plaza in Perak and the handing out of Hari Raya hampers to the officers.

He added that 500 first response life support (FRLS) officers trained by the Health Ministry and the private sector would also be on hand.

The department will have six helicopters operating out of its Subang air base.

“We also have 240 officers trained to handle incidents involving hazardous materials,” he added.

“Since Sept 24, the Fire and Rescue Department had attended to 59 calls involving 57 injuries and nine deaths,” he said.
