GEORGE TOWN: Motorcycle lanes have been included in the design of the Second Penang Bridge.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said it is a government initiative to bring down the death rate among motorcyclists.
“The cost benefit is six times for every ringgit spent to build the bridge,” he said during a press conference after chairing the 49th Road Safety Council Meeting yesterday.
Ong also said he had met the Penang Chief Minister and held discussions with several parties on the dredging works at Prai Terminal and North Channel.
“We have drawn up the scope of work and budget involved. The requisition has been put to the Finance Ministry,” he said.
Ong said the dredging was part of the comprehensive plan that would include other ports including Port Klang and Kuantan Port.
He also said Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd had been working for the past few months on the extension plan for the Penang International Airport and the assessment was still in progress.
“What is important is to be able to cater for more passenger loads and flights but of course we have to look into the maintenance, repair and overhaul market,” he said.
On the electrified double-track project, Ong said based on his findings, KTMB, Gamuda Bhd and MMC Corp Bhd were not at fault in causing flash floods.
