Be responsible on the road, motorists told

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists have been advised to be responsible and careful on the road.

Director-general of the Road Safety Department Datuk Suret Singh said it was essential for them to assess factors like road condition and weather while driving.

“If the speed limit is 110kph, slow down to 80kph or 90kph if it is raining so that you can brake in time.

“Slow down when you are negotiating a bend,” he told reporters yesterday after the launch of a road safety campaign in conjunction with The Super Home Ideas exhibition and exclusive property and investment show by the Transport Minister.

Suret Singh was commenting on a road accident at the 21st kilometre of the road between Kuala Krai and Gua Musang on Friday that killed 10 people and seriously injured a two-year-old girl.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that the crash death toll could have been reduced if the passengers in the Perodua Kancil and Kenari had buckled-up.

Gua Musang police chief Supt Ahmad Termizi Abd Haq said initial investigations found that passengers in the two vehicles were not wearing seat belts during the accident.

This caused them to be thrown out of the cars. “The investigation was based on their injuries and the unused seat belts,” he said.

Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department Operational Division Assistant Director Shahrin Yusmar Mat Yusop said the Kuala Lumpur-Kota Baru route via Gua Musang had been identified as an accident prone area.

The identified areas are along Felda Chiku 1, 2 and 3, and Paloh 1, 2, and 3.

Kelantan police have identified 20 roads in 10 districts as being accident prone based on statistics last year.
