Rush causes glitch at JPJ

PETALING JAYA: Motorists may be rushing to renew their driving licence and road tax after receiving their year-end bonus.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said Malaysians could also be rushing to make other transactions, such as claiming their road tax rebate, before the Chinese New Year break.

He said the department was also compiling the number of cars registered, licences and summonses issued as well as revenue collection to be tabled in its annual report, which he hoped to announce next Friday.

“That could have led to some delays in our computer system. Similarly, people may be rushing to conduct their transactions before the Chinese New Year holidays,” he said yesterday.

Solah was responding to a statement by Pos Malaysia that there had been a sudden increase in the volume of JPJ transactions, which it blamed for the erratic connection in both computer systems, resulting in system unavailability.

In the statement, which was advertised in major English and Malay newspapers, the postal agency had also said that customers might experience intermittent delays in JPJ services until all issues were resolved by the end of this month.

Solah said the department had installed 20 new servers at 20 JPJ branches throughout the country to enhance its online services and computer system.

“In that process, there may be a glitch or two resulting in some delay. But this is an interim problem and we are monitoring the situation. At present, the computer system seems to be quite stable,” he said.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the hitch was an operational problem and had instructed Solah to clarify and keep the public informed about the matter.
