KLANG: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat has reminded motorcyclists to ensure that their crash helmets are approved by Sirim.
He also cautioned motorcyclists from using toy helmets, which are replicas of crash helmets.
“People have to be careful when they buy their crash helmets,” Ong told a press conference yesterday after launching a motivational symposium organised by the Klang MCA Youth.
He added that the Road Safety Department and relevant agencies were working together with other organisations to ensure that
crash helmets sold locally meet the necessary specifications.
Ong also advised motorcyclists against using crash helmets for more than five years.
“When a crash helmet has been used for more than five years, there is a big possibility that it is no longer effective, as the material used to make it may have deteriorated,” he said.
He said this information was from data compiled by local and foreign road safety agencies.
Ong also said the use of crash helmets by local motorcyclists had yet to touch the 100% mark.
“There are still motorcyclists and pillion riders in rural areas who do not use crash helmets.
