KUALA LUMPUR: The 19th edition of Ops Sikap will begin on Monday and will involve more than 6,000 enforcement personnel, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said.

Ong said Ops Sikap XIX would be carried out from Jan 19 until Feb 2 in conjunction with the balik kampung rush during Chinese New Year and added that there would be far greater private sector participation.

Some of the contributions coming from the private sector include car stickers with safety messages, reflective jackets for motorcyclists and child helmets.

Ong said although people continued to die on the road, the effort to ensure roads were safe would continue.

“It will not break our spirit. It is actually a challenge that we must face,” he said during the launch of the Chinese New Year integrated road safety campaign on Thursday.

Ong urged motorists to have the correct attitude when driving be serious about safety.

“The public need to understand the meaning of safety. Campaigns are not done just because it has to be done or for propaganda.”

At a press conference later, Ong expressed his confidence about the ongoing Road Safety Education initiative carried out jointly by the Transport and Education ministries.

“By focusing on the youngsters, we will be able to inculcate the right attitudes and values in relation to behaviour on the road.”

Ong said this move would help reach the target of two deaths for every 10,000 vehicles by 2010 compared to the current 3.5 deaths for every 10,000 vehicles.

Ong also said the rear seatbelt ruling which came into force on Jan 1 was taking effect with a marked improvement in compliance in most urban areas.
