KUALA LUMPUR: The 19th edition of Ops Sikap begins on Monday and will involve more than 6,000 enforcement personnel, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said.

Ong said Ops Sikap XIX would be carried out from Jan 19 to Feb 2 in conjunction with the balik kampung rush for Chinese New Year, adding that there would be greater private sector participation in the operation.

Some of the contributions from the private sector include car stickers with safety messages, reflective jackets for motorcyclists and child helmets.

Ong said that although fatal accidents still occurred, the effort to ensure road safety would continue.

“It will not break our spirit. It is actually a challenge that we must face,” he said at the launch of the Chinese New Year integrated road safety campaign here yesterday.

Ong urged motorists to have the right attitude when driving and be serious about safety.

“The public needs to understand the meaning of safety. Campaigns are not carried out just because it has to be done or for propaganda.”

At a press conference later, Ong expressed confidence about the ongoing Road Safety Education initiative carried out jointly by the Transport and Education ministries.

“By focusing on the youngsters, we will be able to inculcate the right attitude and values in relation to behaviour on the road.”

This move, he said, would help reduce the ratio of death to vehicle to 2:10,000 by 2010 compared to the current 3.5 deaths for every 10,000 vehicles.

Ong also said that the rear seat belt ruling which came into force on Jan 1 was taking effect with a marked improvement in compliance in most urban areas.
