NIBONG TEBAL: Too many agencies looking after public transport may hamper efforts to develop a sustainable transportation system.

Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros) director-general Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said presently, there were a whopping 13 agencies that handled issues related to public transportation.

“Sadly, we are yet to have a national transportation policy to guide all these agencies toward a common agenda.

“The lack of synergy among these agencies may work against the creation of a sustainable transportation system,” he said in his professorial public lecture at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) engineering campus here Tuesday.

Dr Ahmad Farhan, who presented a paper titled Sustainable Transportation in Malaysia: Myth, Reality and Aspiration, said putting more public buses on the streets would not necessarily solve Malaysia’s rising transportation problems.

He stressed that sustainability covered mobility, safety, environmental well-being, affordability and accessibility of public transportation besides nurturing behavioral changes in the people’s mindset.

“Malaysia is a country in haste as we approach the targeted Vision 2020. And when in haste, there are usually the elements of cutting corners.

“If we cut corners to compromise safety and quality, it will hamper development,” he said.

Dr Ahmad Farhan said a systematic approach based on research and development was necessary to transform the myth and aspirations for a sustainable transport system into reality.

He said apart from developing a Malaysian highway capacity manual, he was in the midst of formulating a sustainable transport index that would be modelled after the Air Pollutant Index (API).
