Fuel depots bring down petrol price

LUBOK ANTU: People in this rural area of Sarawak are now buying petrol at the same price as those in the urban areas at RM1.80 per litre.

Prior to this, they were paying as much as RM3.20 a litre.

This was made possible under the Community Drumming Project which saw the government reducing the cost of transportation by siting fuel storage sites in Lemanak, Engkilili and Skrang.

However, the siting of the petrol and diesel depots here has not been without its detractors.

The opposition, preparing themselves for the Batang Ai by-election here next month, has labelled the price uniformity exercise as a gimmick to fish for votes.

"The decision to pick this district to have such a fuel depot was made a year ago.

"It has nothing to do with the by-election," Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said yesterday after launching the Community Drumming Programme at the Batang Ai jetty here.

"We (the government) did not wait for the by-election as an excuse to launch it at Lubok Antu. We had planned for this a long time ago.

"Moreover, the people here have waited a long time to buy petrol at the same price as those in the major urban areas," he said.

Last month, Shahrir oversaw the launch of similar depots in Kapit to enable folks along Sungai Rajang to also enjoy petrol at RM1.80 per litre.

These depots are floating facilities on the river.

The ministry plans to have 114 such depots in the state.

Shahrir said it could take his ministry a year to have all the 114 depots operational and for everyone in the state to enjoy petrol at one uniform price.
