MIRI: Three oil palm plantation workers have been arrested for staging a hijack and robbery of a cargo truck belonging to their company.
The three men, in their 30s, were arrested by the Miri police on Saturday.
They were employed by a huge plantation company in the rural sub-district of Niah.
One of the three, a driver for the company, lodged a report on Wednesday claiming that he was robbed and beaten up by a group of armed robbers while delivering a cargo consignment from Batu Niah to Bintulu.
He claimed bandits beat him up and hijacked his truck, which had been laden with palm oil and fertiliser, and abandoned it along the Sarawak Second Coastal Highway, some 120km south of here.
Upon investigation, police found the details suspicious, and suspected that the driver could have tried to capitalise on fears of armed robberies on the highway to stage his own robbery so he could cheat his company of the vehicle and cargo, worth more than RM100,000.
Police have arrested the driver and two other workers who were believed to have assisted him.
Miri OCPD Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim confirmed the arrests and said police had recovered the truck and the cargo.
