KUALA TERENGGANU: Construction work on the second phase of the East Coast Expressway (LPT2), which was delayed for several times, is expected to be completed in May 2011.
State Infrastructure and Public Amenities Committee chairman Yahya Khatib Mohamad said the project was currently 60 per cent completed.
"The state government is constantly working with the Works Ministry in monitoring the progress and discussing any issue to ensure that the project is completed on schedule," he said in reply to Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (PAS-Rhu Rendang) at the state assembly sitting here today.
Yahya said one contractor had withdrawn from the project so far, but a new contractor had been appointed to continue the work, which cost RM28 million.
On Abdul Hadi's supplementary question whether the total cost for the construction of LPT2 had increased following the delays, Yahya said the committee had yet to be informed about the matter.
"However, I'm sure that eventually, the cost will differ from the original cost due to the increase in the prices of the construction materials," he said.
The whole LPT2 project costs RM3.7 billion.
He said 50 per cent of the cost for the project was financed by the state government while the rest was by the federal government.
