PUTRAJAYA: State Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement chiefs have to check the roadworthiness of 5,081 express buses nationwide by the third week of Ramadan.
Director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said the chiefs would have to ensure the safety of brakes and tyres of express buses that are kept at the depots and workshops of 257 operators.
They would have to carry out the inspections with Puspakom.
“We want to encourage people to use more public transport and less private vehicles, especially rental cars,” he told a press conference here on Thursday.
He added 2,000 JPJ will also be deployed to perform random safety checks on express buses in 35 bus terminals between Sept 6 and Sept 28, while the police will be taking random urine tests of express bus drivers.
“We also advised the operators not to schedule their drivers to drive long distances so frequently to reduce their fatigue, which can lead to accidents,” he said.
