Age limit of school buses extended to 30

PETALING JAYA: Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board has extended the age limit of school buses to 30 years.

The extension, which will be enforced from Jan 1, comes in the wake of appeals from school bus operators and to prevent disruption of services.

The board’s chairman, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique, said the decision was made after considering the economic factor.

“The extension of the age limit will allow school bus operators to continue operating vehicles of more than 20 years and ensure that services are provided to students,” she said.

However, she said for fresh licences and replacement of vehicles, the school buses cannot be more than 20 years from the vehicle registration rate. These vehicles must also be examined by Puspakom, she said in a statement.

Federation of Malaysian School Bus Operators Association adviser Chee Ah Tey asked the Government to provide a reasonable grace period for operators to buy new buses as 35% of the existing school buses were more than 30 years old.

He said the current trend was to buy vans to fetch schoolchildren as parents wanted their children to be sent home early after school.
