PETALING JAYA: The Government is in the final stages of restructuring the toll rates for the country’s expressways, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
He said that the plan will ensure better highway facilities, less vehicle congestion, higher quality highways and reasonable toll rates.
“All these factors will be absorbed in the package that would be welcomed by the people.
“One important touchpoint of the Government is our stress on the 1Malaysia philosophy with its ‘people first, performance now’ concept.
“Another important touchpoint is a properly-managed highway system which can satisfy the people, whereby they can enjoy a smooth drive, less congestion and pay acceptable toll rates,” he said at the launching of the Persada Plus, the new corporate headquarters of highway concessionaire PLUS Expressway Bhd.
Works Minister Datuk Shahziman Abu Mansor, who also attended the event, said the package plan was being studied by the Economic Planning Unit and is expected to be completed soon.
In his speech, Najib said connectivity was an important factor in the development of a modern economy.
He said the development rate of a country can also be measured by the growth of its highway systems.
“It cannot be denied that highways have opened up new landscapes in our national economy in the form of economic growth and development in areas adjacent to our highways.
“The movement of people, goods and services depend on our modern highways.
“Such connectivity has contributed towards an exponential increase of development in our country,” he added.
