Devices to detect landslides along NSE

SUBANG: PLUS Expressways Bhd has installed hi-tech devices that can detect impending landslides and reduce rock falls along the North-South Expressway (NSE).

To date, 70 locations along the expressway have been equipped with the Real Time Monitoring System (RTMS).

PLUS chief operating officer Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said the RTMS, which were produced locally after four-years of research, was performing well.

It acts as a rain gauge on priority slopes and collects data to determine if there is a need to maintain the slope. The data is then sent via radio signal to PLUS’s main server.

“The RTMS is an in-house development of PLUS and the first in South-East Asia,” she said.

The last major landslide along the NSE was in 2004, she added.

Nik Airina said RM443mil was spent last-year on highway maintenance, which included pavement structural overlays, slope rehabilitation and structural strengthening of bridges.

“We set aside almost RM500mil every year for such maintenance that also encompasses routine, curative and preventive measures,” she said at a media briefing yesterday.

Nik Airina said more than 1,000 personnel, including engineers and technical executives, conduct over 10,000 inspections or condition assessments each year.
