PENANG: A laundry shop owner was killed when a car driven by a man under the influence of alcohol rammed into a roadblock at Jalan Masjid Negeri here early Thursday.
Penang deputy police chief Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said M. Muniandy, 65, who owned a laundy shop at Dhoby Ghaut, was on his routine round on a motorcycle to collect items to be laundered from restaurants when he came across a police roadblock near the Greenlane McDonald at about 4.30am.
A Honda Civic car suddenly rammed into a Naza Forte car, which had stopped for inspection at the roadblock, before hitting Muniandy, he told reporters here. He said Muniandy fainted and when he regained consciousness he called one of his sons.
“Later Muniandy collapse again and was sent the Penang Hospital before he was transferred to a private hospital.”
He was pronounced dead at about 8am and his body was sent the hospital’s mortuary.
Tun Hisan said initial investigation revealed that the 27-year-old Honda driver was drunk.
He and his three friends were detained for questioning.
Tun Hisan was met at the hospital after visiting a police officer, Raja Rosasnizam Raja Roslan, who suffered a broken hand and ribs in the incident. Muniandy’s son, PVM Magendrarajan, 31, an ambulance driver, said his father was a hardworking man and had refused to retire.
