New safety campaign targets young road users

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Safety Department will embark on a special campaign to reduce road fatalities among young motorists and road users.

The agency is formulating a scheme to make them change their attitude and behaviour while on the road.

Its director-general Datuk Suret Singh said the Government would focus on those aged between 15 and 25 in its effort to create a new approach on road safety.

He added that most road deaths reported involved teenagers.

“Of the 6,700 road fatalities recorded in 2009, 60% involved motorcycles. A total of 71.6% of the deaths involved those aged between 15 and 25.

“Forty-one per cent of them also didn’t possess valid driving licences,” he said at a Safety Riding Clinic here yesterday.

Suret said research by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) revealed that these victims lacked skills in handling motorcycles because they didn’t have a licence and they were not taught to handle the machines properly.

He urged parents and teachers to be strict with their children by prohibiting them from riding motorcycles unless they had a driving licence.

Suret also said the Road Safety Education module would be extended to secondary schools next year after its implementation in primary schools began in 2007.
