Delayed work on bridge upsets road users

JOHOR BARU: The prolonged construction work on a four-lane bridge connecting Permas Jaya to Bakar Batu, which has caused huge traffic jams, has left many residents fuming.

Some of them have even acted aggressively by threatening construction workers and vandalising the partitions and barriers placed in the area.

Mechanical engineer, Alvin Tan, 24, said the delay in the completion of the project had not only inconvenienced him but also burnt a hole in his wallet.

“It usually takes me about 10 minutes to drive from Permas Jaya to the city but now, due to the bottlenecks and uneven roads, travelling time can take up to 45 minutes,” he told The Star.

Tan said that the potholes had also damaged his car rims due to the poor lighting at night.

Workshop owner Dwayne Ho, 29, also complained about damage to his vehicle because of the potholes.

“It is very dangerous to drive along these roads especially at night because there is a portion of the road just after the Permas Jaya Bridge which is not lit up,” he said.

Engineer Rajiv Singh, 25, who travels daily from his house in Bandar Baru Permas Jaya to Singapore for work, said the congested road just before the Permas Jaya bridge was the main cause of the chock-a-block traffic.

“Many drivers use the Permas Jaya bridge route as an alternative to Pasir Gudang as the Pasir Gudang highway is always congested during rush hour,” he said.

They hoped that the construction work would be completed soon as it was an inconvenience for residents and road users.

Permas assemblyman M.M. Samy said he was told by the contractors there that the construction work would be completed and the roads would be reopened by September.

“I visited the construction site recently and was told by workers there that some motorists had threatened them while others resorted to vandalising the construction partitions to vent their frustration,” he said.
