Advertisements blocking the view of motorists

Postby admin » Fri Mar 11, 2011 7:53 am

Motorists are complaining about the large posters and banners put up by housing developers in Cyberjaya which are obstructing their view as well as becoming an eyesore in the IT capital.

A motorist said lax enforcement had resulted in a “posters and bunting” war among housing developers and most of the advertisement boards were displayed along major throughfares.

He said as an emerging township, the advertisements along the major roads were certainly an eyesore.

“In January, the Sepang Municipal Council went on a blitz to remove illegal buntings, banners and hoardings in the municipality, leaving Cyberjaya untouched,’’ said the motorist.

He pointed out that although most of the banners had the council logo, it was improper for the developers to hang posters on streetlight poles.

Council president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said 1,072 summonses were issued for illegal advertisements and that only 923 licences for banners and buntings were approved in the Sepang municipality last year.

Most of the banners, buntings and hoardings without the council logo are put up indiscriminately along Persiaran Apec, Persiaran Multimedia and Persiaran Tasik.

Some of the banners are huge and placed at road intersections, blocking the view of motorists.

Developers are also placing more than the permitted number of advertisements in a given locality although there were special locations allocated to display their advertisements.

Mohd Sayuthi said since Cyberjaya was still developing, the council had given a little leeway to developers.

“We allowed a little flexibility, otherwise how are they going to market their properties?’’ he said.

He added that the guidelines, however, stipulated that no advertisement materials should be put up along protocol roads.

He admitted that the council had been getting many complaints from the public on the adverisements on streetlight poles along major roads.
