THERE were 414,421 road accidents with 6,872 deaths last year.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri told the house that the government had taken drastic measures to cut down the number of fatal accidents.
"We have increased community advocacy programmes targeting motorcyclists, who are the high risk group that contributed to 60 per cent of deaths in road accidents," he said in reply to a question from Datuk Lilah Yasin (BN-Jempol).
Rahim said the ministry was stepping up its road safety campaigns in the mainstream media and social networking sites such as Facebook and YouTube.
The ministry is also implementing an automated enforcement system to reduce the number of fatalities caused by speeding. Enforcement officers have been put on express buses to catch drivers who break the law.
