JOHOR BARU: The Sungai Skudai Bridge is set to become a landmark in Iskandar Malaysia when the New Coastal Highway is to open for motorists by the end of next year.
Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) CEO Ismail Ibrahim said the bridge provided breathtaking view of Johor Baru and Singapore.
“The bridge structure is very unique because it crosses over two rivers – Sungai Skudai and Sungai Danga,” he added.
He said it is a challenge to build the bridge as the supporting beams had to be built on several small islands on the river.
Ismail said this at the concrete pouring of Sungai Skudai Bridge ceremony to mark the completion of one of the major Iskandar Malaysia infrastructure projects at the construction site at Jalan Persiaran Danga.
The dual three-lane bridge with a width of 15.29 metre is wider than the existing Penang Bridge and the 605 metre bridge is the longest bridge of its kind ever built in Johor.
The RM120mil bridge is part of a 15km toll-free highway, which costed at RM945 million, that links Johor Baru city centre to Nusajaya.
Ismail said with the highway would reduce travelling time from the city centre to Nusajaya to 15mins from its current 30mins. It would also disperse traffic congestion by 30% to the city centre.
