TAIPING: Lorry drivers from out of town have been pilfering diesel from the fuel tanks of their vehicles in Simpang here.
Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives Ministry enforcement officers discovered this when about 1,030 litres of diesel worth some RM5,000 in plastic containers were seized from a shophouse here on Thursday. No arrest was made.
Ironically, the shophouse is located only about 150m from the enforcement office.
“There is no (consumer) law to nab lorry drivers who pilfer from their tanks but when the diesel is stored at a location, we can move in and book those involved,” said Taiping enforcement division head Basharuddin Mohiyuddin.
Following a tip-off, he began monitoring the shophouse from his office window where he noticed that it was done in broad daylight.
Basharuddin said the lorry drivers would stop near an old car and the driver would use a siphon and plastic containers to store the diesel.
The lorry drivers would normally siphon about 20 litres from their tanks so as not to arouse suspicion, said Basharuddin, adding that the lorry drivers would receive RM1 for each litre.
