Limo association wants rival to go

GEORGE TOWN: The Registrar of Societies (ROS) should not have registered the Bayan Lepas International Airport Taxi Drivers and Owners Association as its functions are similar to that of an existing association.

Penang Airport Limousine Drivers Associa-tion chairman Hafizi Ahmad said ROS had sanctioned the other association on May 10 last year and its founding members included those formerly from his association.

“We are totally against it, as this has created a rift among the taxi drivers. There are already quarrels taking place between members of both the associations when picking up passengers at the airport,” said Hafizi.

Speaking to reporters after a peaceful demonstration by some 60 limousine drivers near the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas yesterday, Hafizi claimed his association had 240 members while the new one had fewer than 20.

“We have also been around for the past 26 years while they are just a year old,” he said.

He said a complaint was lodged with the ROS a few days before the approval was given and ROS had told him that it would look into the complaint.

Hafizi said ROS should seriously reconsider the need for more than one association as the functions were similar.

Bayan Lepas International Airport Taxi Drivers and Owners Association secretary Yusoff Md. Biah, 47, acknowledged that both the associations provided the same nature of service.
