Metramac tolls abolished seven years early

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has abolished toll collection at the toll plazas in the direction of Cheras and Petaling Jaya on the Metramac Highway with immediate effect.

Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the toll collection was being abolished seven years before the concession period for the highway was due to end, which is May 31, 2018.

He said the move would benefit some 100,000 users of the highway especially residents of Bandar Permaisuri, Bandar Tun Razak and the surrounding areas.

“The Government will also not have to pay any compensation as per the agreement to close this toll early,” he said at a ceremony to mark the toll abolition at the Cheras toll plaza of the highway last night.

The toll rates at the highway (both directions) were RM0.50 (Class 1 vehicles), RM1 (Class 2 and 3), RM0.30 (Class 4) and RM0.50 (Class 5).

On Jan 28, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had announced that toll collection on the highway would be discontinued before the concession period ended in 2018.

East-West Link toll abolished

Postby admin » Tue May 17, 2011 10:30 am

KUALA LUMPUR: Toll collection for Cheras-bound and Petaling Jaya-bound traffic on the East-West Link Expressway was abolished last night.

Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the move was a present for the people in conjunction with Wesak Day today.

"It is also aimed at easing the people's burden," he said after announcing the termination of the toll collection.

The RM125 million expressway, connecting the Salak and Taman Connaught interchanges, opened in 1995.

The concessionaire was Metramac Corporation.

The toll rates were 50 sen for cars and RM1 for buses and heavy vehicles.

In January, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the concession agreement for the expressway would end earlier than its expiry date in 2018.

He said the government would not renew the concession and that it would not pay any compensation.

Shaziman said: "With the abolition of toll, an estimated RM180 million will not be collected during the remaining period of the concession."

He said the closure of the toll plaza would benefit about 100,000 motorists plying the expressway, especially for residents of Bandar Permaisuri, Bandar Tun Razak and surrounding areas.

"We hope this will ease traffic in these areas."
