MALACCA: The MCA has moved in to help an old folks home in Bukit Baru here get rid of a group of noisy bike racers who disturb the residents in the early hours of the day.

“We complained to the police but did not get much response, so we have brought up the matter to the MCA,” said Malacca state welfare committee secretary S. V. Vijayathevan.

He said the Mat Rempit would force open the gate at the entrance to Rumah Sejathera, run by the committee, to enter the compound in the wee hours of the morning.

Vijayathevan, 80, added that a straight stretch of about 200m within the compound had been turned into a racing track by the illegal racers, especially during weekends.

“The residents dare not confront them as they are afraid the rowdies would retaliate aggressively,” he told The Star, adding that the group of about 10 illegal racers would rev their engines and create a lot of noise that rudely awakens the home residents during the pre-dawn period.

Malacca Historic City councillor Ronald Gan Yong Hoe said MCA state chief Datuk Gan Tian Loo received a call from the home's caretaker on Tuesday regarding the problem and had asked him to solve the issue.

Ronald said he received the SMS from Tian Loo at noon yesterday, telling him to resolve the matter within 24 hours.

Ronald said he had since asked MCA Youth members to keep watch on the bikers.

He said he would meet with the police from the Bukit Baru station to get their help in patrolling the home.

He has also asked for a meeting with the local village security and development committee chairman to discuss setting up a barricade at the entrance of the home to prevent trespassers from entering the home's compound.

On a long-term basis, Ronald said he proposed that several humps be constructed along the 200m-long road and the placement of security guards at the entrance.
