KEMAMAN: Reminiscent of scenes from the Fast and Furious blockbusters, two cars closed in on an oil tanker and a man from one of the cars waved a parang at the driver, ordering him to pull over.
The tanker ground to a stop after both cars sandwiched it in the 12.45am incident in Kerteh, near here, on Sunday.
Several men then drove the tanker away.
However, police caught the trail of the hijackers and recovered the tanker at Santong Paka, near here, at about 3am the same day.
They also nabbed two gang members.
Following up on the arrests, the police raided a place in Taman Industri Paka at about 12.30am on Tuesday and caught two others – believed to be the gang’s mastermind, aged 37, and his right-hand man, 28.
Kemaman district police chief Supt Abdullah Sani Salat said:
“They thought they could escape the law after performing a daring heist, like in the movies.
“As good as they think they are, there is no escaping the long arm of the law.”
He said police were confident of capturing the remaining members of the gang.
Supt Abdullah said the suspected mastermind had past criminal records for theft and was wanted by the police for failing to attend a court case.
“We will investigate further to uncover whether this gang was involved in other crimes.
“We will not let such gangs run rampant here,” he said.
