MALACCA: Gaping manholes and damaged drain covers along the walkways in Jonker Street are posing a risk to residents and tourists in the area.
Following a tip-off, Starmetro conducted a check recently in the area to verify the claims.
The most recent casualty was a 37-year-old victim who fell into an uncovered manhole at Jonker Street.
He recovered with minor injuries and said since the incident, no effort was made by the authority to cover up the exposed manhole.
“I fear for small children who may get hurt if they trip and fall into the holes,” said the victim who declined to be named.
Stagnant water collected on the holes, he added, is also posing a danger to unwary pedestrians.
Further checks also showed that shopkeepers in the area had taken their own initiative to cover the gaps with wooden planks.
A trader who wants to be known only as ‘Lim’ said the business community in Jonker Street had informed the Malacca Historic City Council on the exposed manhole and drain covers.
“So far, no action was taken despite numerous complaints.
“We can only appeal the council to expedite repair works to ensure these damaged covers are replaced,” he said.
