Motorists still ignorant of guidelines at petrol stations

LIPIS: Safety awareness among road users while at petrol stations is still below expectation.

Pahang Human Resources and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Fong Koong Fuee said many road users still did not follow the stipulated guidelines while filling up petrol.

“By right, they must switch off the engine of their vehicles before filling up.

“Some even continue smoking or talking on their cellphones despite the danger it posed,” he said.

Fong, who is the Cheka assemblyman, said all stations had displayed signs on such restrictions at their premises.

He said some even pasted photographs of burnt cars to remind the public.

“However, some motorists are still ignorant or choose not to comply,” he said.

Fong said failure to adhere strictly to such guidelines might result in dire consequences to those concerned and other road users.

He reminded motorists not to gamble their lives as it could trigger a fire and subsequent explosion.

“To this end, petrol station operators should take the initiative to remind motorists of the dos and don’ts.
