PETALING JAYA: Motorists can now use four lanes of the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu announced.
Two more lanes are still closed pending remedial works, which are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“The MRR2 is now safe to use. Motorists going home for the festive holidays now have more routes to use instead of going into the city,” he said after opening the new Majlis Link Road near the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Sungai Way yesterday.
The MRR2 was closed in March after cracks were spotted along the pillars. Cracks were later discovered on 31 of the 33 pillars.
Samy Vellu was responding to a question on how the MRR2 would cope with the increased traffic during the Deepavali and Hari Raya holidays, when most city motorists drive back to their hometowns.
“Motorists can use either the Penchala Link or the MRR2 and go on to Sungai Buloh and the North-South Expressway to go north. South-bound motorists can use the Guthrie Link from Rawang to Klang,” he said.
“I hope drivers will be careful and use their head instead of their emotions when they go home,” he said.
On the Majlis Link route, Samy Vellu said the project was delayed because the contractor had to strengthen the road as well.
The RM60mil project, which was contracted to Melati Ehsan (M) Sdn Bhd in December 2003, was to have been completed in August.
