SEREMBAN: Drivers of heavy vehicles will have to follow designated routes when paying toll or risk a fine if a proposal by the Works Ministry is approved by the Cabinet.

Works Minister Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu said this was necessary to reduce congestion at toll plazas.

"In fact I have already told the Malaysian Highway Authority to work with toll concessionaries on this.

"If the motorists enter the wrong lane, they would be surcharged," he said adding that signs would be put up at toll plazas to remind approaching motorists on their designated routes.

Samy Vellu said the signs along the routes would be painted with different colours depending on the type of vehicle.

"The signs would be put up a kilometre before the toll plaza. We do not want motorists to claim they were unaware of the ruling," he said.

Samy Vellu said this would also put a stop to queue jumping, especially by drivers of heavy vehicles.

He said although the left lanes at toll plazas were meant for heavy vehicles, the drivers often entered the smaller ones meant for other vehicles.

Asked when the new ruling would be enforced, Samy Vellu said it also needs to be endorsed by the Attorney General's Chambers and Parliament.

"We would also need to make some amendments to the relevant laws," he said.

However Samy Vellu said drivers of other vehicles would be allowed to use the routes designated for heavy vehicles if traffic on the other lanes was heavy.

He was speaking to reporters after opening Plus' upgraded north bound R&R area.
