Upgrading delayed due to inefficiency

Postby admin » Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:35 am

THE upgrading work on the Federal Route from the Bukit Tengah roundabout to the Juru dam was delayed when utility companies undertaking work along the stretch failed to co-ordinate among themselves, leading to massive traffic jams.

The Central Seberang Prai Public Works Department (JKR) meanwhile has assured motorists that work on the RM38mil project which was supposed to be ready in December this year had resumed.

Bukit Tengah assemblyman Ng Siew Lai and her Kadun Watch Committee met with the department’s district engineer Che Aziz Derasid who briefed them on the progress of the project at the JKR headquarters in Bukit Mertajam on Friday.

Che Aziz said the Government had to pay RM17mil to acquire land for the project.

Speaking to reporters later, Ng said the meeting was called following public complaints on the congestion problem, especially during peak hours where traffic along the 4km stretch is at a standstill.

“The delay was caused by utility companies which could not com-plete their clearing work in time to make way for the project contractor to continue their upgrading work on the road.

“Road users should not be incon-venienced due to inefficiency by the utility companies,” she said.

She added that JKR had assured that the project would be ready by July next year.

She said JKR should ensure that the main contractor focus on the critical areas first to avoid any congestion and that alternative access routes should be planned so as not to incon-venience road users.

“I have also told them to carry out work that may cause massive jams during non-peak hours,” she added.

The upgrading work along the route under Package 2 involved expansion of the road from two lanes to four lanes, replacing a new bridge, the installation of four traffic lights, building a new flyover and a pedestrian overhead crossing.

Taman Sentul Jaya Residents Association chairman Sarajun Hoda Abdul Hassan said the parties responsible in the project should do their jobs efficiently instead of blaming others for the problems.
