Folks to seek PM's help over access road

Postby admin » Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:41 am

Committee chairman Tan Boon Wah said they had targeted to collect 10,000 signatures in one month but had managed to do so in just two weeks.

“We will show the Prime Minister the signatures on Friday,” he said. We hope the government would not force the 40,000 residents of Bandar Mahkota Cheras to travel an extra 4km while a 1.5km-long access road that has cost the developer RM16mil is ready for use.”

The committee brought a thick stack of papers containing the signatures to Parliament House on Monday. Mediator Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai wanted to table an emergency motion pertaining to the matter but it was rejected.

A number of MPs also lent their support to the call to open the access road that has been barricaded since it was built following a disagreement between Cheras-Kajang Highway concessionaire Grand Saga Sdn Bhd and Bandar Mahkota Cheras developer Narajaya Sdn Bhd.

They also agreed that residents should not have to pay toll to use the access road.

Among those who signed are Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang, Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen, Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan, Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.

The committee also approached other MPs and collected five more signatures, namely Permatang Pauh MP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Kota Melaka MP Wong Nai Chee, Wangsa Maju MP Yew Teong Look, Rantau Panjang MP Abdul Fatah Harun and Pengkalan Chepa MP Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman.

Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad has also agreed to conduct a site visit to check on the matter, even though he did not sign the papers.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said he would discuss the matter with Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

Nazri also said that it was not fair for the residents to pay toll to use the access road in their housing estate.

Those who want to join the committee in handing the signatures to the PM's Office in Putrajaya at 10am on Friday can register today at 8pm at Restoran ABC Mydin, Mahkota Walk.
