THE 100,000-odd residents of Seberang Jaya, Butterworth, are appealing to the Government to present them a special Merdeka gift by scrapping the Sungai Nyior toll collection that will be implemented on Sept 1.
Seberang Jaya assemblyman Ariff Shah Omar Shah said the residents hoped toll would not be collected along the 5km stretch from Jalan Heng Choon Thian to the Seberang Jaya roundabout.
He said Seberang Prai residents were subject to toll collection at nine places while there were no tollbooths on Penang island which had expressways costing hundreds of millions of ringgit.
He said Seberang Jaya residents had been loyal to the Government by returning the mandate to the Barisan Nasional in every general election.
“It will be a perfect Merdeka gift to them if the Government scrapped the proposed toll collection which is to start a day after National Day,” he said at the launching of Merdeka celebra-tion organised by KBLK Sdn Bhd, the concessionaire of the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway at the Kubang Semang toll plaza office here yesterday.
Motorists interviewed had opposed the toll collection, saying it would burden them.
The Malaysian Highway Authority announced on Tuesday that toll would be collected at the Sungai Nyior toll plaza from Sept 1.
