KUALA LUMPUR: Planning to drive up north this Merdeka weekend? Then take a look at the travel time guide (see box).
The suggested travel time is only for Klang Valley residents planning to travel up north on Aug 30 and 31 using the North-South Expressway (NSE).
PLUS chief operating officer Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said the suggested time was not compulsory.
“The suggested times are based on travel trends among Malaysians during previous long weekends and festive season holidays,” she said.
Statistics showed that 85% of traffic from the Klang Valley headed north during the previous Merdeka and this year’s Chinese New Year periods.
“If effective, the guide will be extended for the upcoming festive seasons,” said Nik Airina.
PLUS also advises the public to contact the toll-free PLUSLine (1800-88-0000) which is available 24-hours a day, before starting their journey.
Road users can also tune in to the AMP radio networks.
Malaysian Highway Authority director-general Datuk Mohamad Razali Othman said that if found to be successful, the same formula might be applied to those travelling to the East Coast during the coming festive seasons.
Federal traffic chief, Senior Asst Comm (II) Hamza Taib said the move might also be extended to include travel on Federal roads.
“This measure by MHA and PLUS will complement the Ops Sikap initiative to reduce congestion and the number of accidents on the highway,” SAC Hamza added.
