Procedure to claim vehicles seized by RTD

Under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, a Road Transport officer may seize a vehicle for the purpose of identifying the driver or the vehicle or to stop the continuance of an offence.

A vehicle that is seized by the RTD may be claimed/released when the following matters have been settled:-

* After the identity of the driver or vehicle has been ascertained
* The offence committed has been stopped
* Summons has been issued
* Released by the court.

Release of seized vehicles

Seized vehicles will be released to the following parties:-

* Registered owners
* Financial institutions (if not claimed by the owners within the period stipulated)
* Government agencies such as the police/customs
* Persons authorised by the administrator of estate

In the case of company vehicles, those who are eligible to claim the vehicles are

* Directors
* General managers
* Secretaries
* Appointed/authorised officers

Documents required

The registered owners and claimants must be present at the RTD offices where the vehicles were seized to claim the vehicles and they must bring the following documents:

* Original Registration Card
* Valid MVL and insurance
* Driving licence that is valid and still in force
* Identity card
* Original permit (for commercial vehicles/driving schools)
* Form 49 (for company use),en/
