IPOH: The police will use helicopters to monitor traffic flow on the North-South Expressway during the Hari Raya period.
The move could help reduce road accidents and speed up response to emergencies, Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said.
“The accident rate is usually high during the festive season because of the increased number of people making their way back to their hometowns,” he said.
“With the helicopters, we can cover more ground and respond to emergencies quickly,” he told newsmen yesterday after launching Ops Sikap XIII at the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza.
DCP Zulkifli said the police would also use closed-circuit television cameras to monitor traffic.
“We have identified 44 accident-prone locations along the highway,” said DCP Zulkifli.
“Several emergency response teams will be on standby at four toll plazas along the highway in case of accidents,” he added.
Ops Sikap XIII will run until Oct 21.DCP Zulkifli urged motorists to drive safely while travelling back to their hometowns.
“We all want a joyous Raya celebration and not see people mourn over their loved ones during the festive season,” he said.
