GEORGE TOWN: Whose job is it to keep traffic moving in areas where there is major road works?
It is the responsibility of the police, says state Tourism Development Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow.

Not so. It is the job of the contractor, asserts the police.

Teng vented his frustration at the police for not controlling the traffic at Jalan Penang, where a RM4.4 million road upgrading project is in progress.

"I have not seen any policemen deployed to control the worsening traffic congestion there.
"The police do not seem to bother to attend to the bumper-to-bumper congestion, particularly at peak hours.

"In fact, I am surprised by their inaction as the state police contingent headquarters is located where the work is in progress," Teng said after hearing complaints from about 200 traders in the vicinity and the Lebuh Campbell Business Association members.

Also present was Komtar state assemblyman Datuk Lim Gim Soon.

"We want to know why the policemen are not here to ease the traffic snarl.

"What do they want the state government to do? Arrange for helicopters, speed boats, cars or vans to transport the traffic policemen to the scene?" Teng asked.

The Lebuh Campbell Business Association chairman Charles Leong said he feared his members would be out of business soon following the closure of the entrance to Lebuh Campbell on Thursday.

"The traders will not be able to survive for long as their customers are unable to drive through this street to go to the shops," Leong said.

The road upgrading works started last October and are expected to be completed by May.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azam Abd Hamid denied responsibility and said it was the job of the contractor to ensure smooth traffic flow.

"The project contractor is the one who should be responsible in monitoring the traffic flow," he said.

"It is not fair to blame the police every time for every traffic congestion caused by road works.

"The contractor should have appointed a traffic warden to direct traffic flow in that area."

Azam said road signs should also be put up to guide motorists.
