An assemblyman has suggested converting all existing parking bays along Beach Street in Penang into a bicycle lane.

Yeoh Soon Hin (DAP—Paya Terubong) said the cars could instead park at the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) parking complex.

He said many drivers had a tendency to park their cars illegally, thus causing traffic congestion and inconvenience to other road users.

“The MPPP parking complex is currently under-utilised.

“We are also in need of a proper bicycle lane in George Town, and the colonial and heritage buildings along the street provide a good cycling environment,” he said while debating the Supply Bill 2012 at the state assembly yesterday.
