Residents fear motorists will veer off road curve and hit their homes

The prospect of a busy main road a mere two feet away from their houses is causing fear among the residents along Lebuhraya Thean Teik in Penang.

Road works have expanded the road and brought it much closer to the back of 12 single-storey semi-detached houses in Taman Thean Teik, Bandar Baru Air Itam.

Now residents there fear that cars may crash into their homes.

They are dreading the time when the new part of the road would be open to traffic.

A resident who wanted to be known only as Beh, 55, said that he was worried that drivers might lose control around the sharp bend and crash into the back of his house.

“We might also have cases of drunk motorists driving straight into our homes in the middle of the night,” said Beh who has been living there for the past 30 years.

Khaw Cheng San, 72, who has been living there for the past 40 years, was bothered by the dust and noise caused by the road expansion works.

“There is so much dust in my house from the works, and fumes from vehicles.

“Accidents may also occur because the road is so close to our homes,” said Khaw.

Another resident who gave his name as Shah Hidzer also had similar complaints.

“The noise and air pollution caused by the vehicles is going to get worse once the road is expanded.

“It is also very hot since the trees have been cut down. They used to provide us with a lot of shade,” the 56-year-old man said.

State Public Works, Utilities and Transportation Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng said that he was not aware of the situation at the site.
