Residents unhappy with delay in construction of flyover

Postby admin » Wed Dec 23, 2009 4:15 am

THE construction of a flyover and road upgrade at the junction of the Bukit Jalil Highway and the Serdang Raya main road is not going according to schedule.

The work, which was supposed to have been completed at the end of last year, may now be ready by the middle of next year.

And Serdang Parliament constituency service and coordination centre’s head Datuk Yap Pian Hon is not amused.

He pointed out that there were no clear indications or signs to show the rescheduled date.

Yap, who is also former Serdang MP, said residents of Serdang Raya and Seri Kembangan had expressed their disappointment over the delay.

“The authorities are not serious about solving the congestion and the heavy traffic flow along this area.

“The Federal Government through the Works Ministry has allocated RM14.2mil to undertake this project which started in December 2006 through our efforts over the years,’’ said Yap.

He said the delay had caused much annoyance among the residents and road users due to the slow pace of work and the shortage of workers, a strong indication that the project would fail in its scheduled and extended time frame.

“We urge the Works Ministry to investigate the reasons for the delay and take proactive measures to ensure that this project will be completed in the earliest possible time to relieve and improve the current congestion in Serdang Raya and Bukit Jalil Highway,’’ he added.

Public Works Department (PWD) public relations officer Saipol Anwar Mohd Raji had said that construction of the 1.1km Serdang Raya flyover was on schedule and the highway was expected to be completed by July next year.

The project was halted in July 2007 because of land issues and was stopped again in March last year as the contractor had claimed that the flyover design by PWD was incomplete.

Last September, a new design was approved by PWD and work on the flyover resumed last November.
