IPOH: The Batu 3 Segari-Changkat Jering Road will be widened and upgraded to a dual carriage way, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said.
The upgrading of the 60km-long federal road stretching from Manjung to Taiping will cost an estimated RM680mil and will be carried out under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), he said.
“The Federal Government has already allocated an initial RM20mil for upgrading works,” he said after attending a ceremony to mark the commencement of work at the Ipoh Integrated Bus Terminal and Commercial Complex at Bandar Meru Raya here yesterday.
The Public Works Department has started conducting soil tests and studying the traffic flow along the federal road, he said.
Dr Zambry said the state government had pushed for the project, hoping that it would be able to reduce the number of accidents along the deadly stretch.
“That is why we pushed the Federal Government to seriously consider the project.
“A week ago, I received a letter from the Works Ministry stating that the project had been appro-ved,” he added.
On another matter, Dr Zambry said the new RM38mil integrated bus terminal and commercial complex project by The Combined Bus Services Sdn Bhd was expected to be ready in two years.
In the meantime, the state has approached the Federal Govern-ment to help set up a transportation hub similar to the KL Sentral to link all intercity and intracity transportation – be it rail, bus or taxi.
“We have set our sights on turning the present Medan Kidd bus station and land leading to the railway station nearby into our own Ipoh Sentral, which will be linked to the bus terminal in Bandar Meru Raya,” he said.
Dr Zambry said the state development corporation (SDC) and bus operators had approached Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTM) on the matter.
KTM, he said, had in principle, agreed to the idea.
The land for the proposed Ipoh Sentral project belongs to the SDC, the operators, KTM and the Perak Malay Chamber of Commerce.
