JEMPOL: The Bahau-Rompin stretch near Pasir Besar in Gemas near here has been closed to traffic after a section collapsed.
The collapse was caused by an underground pipe giving way.
The incident, which happened at KM16, disrupted traffic to several parts of south Pahang and north Johor on Wednesday night.
State Public Works Department director Datuk Roslan Md Taha said the large pipe beneath the road broke following a downpour, causing the road to collapse, resulting in a 135sqm crater that was 5m deep.
As a temporary measure, the department will build an iron bridge along the affected stretch.
“The bridge will be completed within four days,” he said, adding that the work to fill up the area with earth and put in new pipes will start as soon as possible.
He also advised motorists to use the Jelai-Pasir Besar-Gemas route as an alternative to get to their destinations.
Roslan appealed to the villagers to stay away from the area as it had been declared unsafe.
District OCPD Supt Mohd Sabri Muhamad said a 28-year-old motorist from Bahau, who was travelling alone on the stretch when the incident happened, suffered injuries when his car crashed into a road embankment.
The victim was admitted to the Jempol Hospital and his condition was reported to be stable.
