GEORGE TOWN: Three major roads in the vicinity of Padang Kota Lama will be closed to all vehicles for the New Year countdown and George Town City Day 2012 celebration.

Timur Laut district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said the affected roads are Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling heading to Lebuh Duke, Lebuh Light heading to Jalan Tun Syed Shah Barakbah and Jalan Padang Kota Lama.

"The public who wish to participate in the celebrations are advised to park their vehicles at the areas provided or use public transport," he told a press conference.

They are also reminded not to bring or use the snow spray to avoid any untoward incidents and that the police would take action on those who bring or spray it on persons or vehicles.

Some 1,000 law enforcement personnel from the police, Penang Municipal Council, Malaysian Civil Defence Department and Rela would be deployed for crowd control around Padang Kota Lama.
