RTD must do more checks on Puspakom

Postby admin » Wed May 21, 2008 4:19 am

PUSPAKOM is the only agency allowed to inspect commercial vehicles to ensure their quality and safety.
Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said the government monitored Puspakom through the Road Transport Department, which carried out checks and spot checks at all 64 inspection centres in the country.

Equipment and facilities used to inspect vehicles were also checked, he added.

Ong said the RTD had been given the green light to inspect Puspakom centres at least six times a year.

"This would mean that the RTD should be carrying out 384 inspections at the 64 centres annually. However, it carried out 192 checks last year."
He said the RTD had failed to conduct regular checks owing to a shortage of inspection officers.

He said the department was working with the Public Service Commission to recruit more officers.

"By the end of the year, we should have at least one officer in each state."

Based on RTD checks last year, Puspakom had been given a show-cause letter to explain why certain vehicles were checked manually even though there were facilities for computerised inspection.

Puspakom had also been asked to explain why there were no reports filed on faulty equipment and why certain officers took a long time to inspect vehicles.

Replying to Sim Tong Him (DAP-Kota Melaka), Ong said more measures would be introduced to boost Puspakom and RTD's effectiveness.
