KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department will carry out "covert and overt" operations one week before and after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
RTD enforcement director Datuk Abdul Rahman Daud said the department wanted to ensure that drivers followed the rules.
Eight million to 10 million people travelled along the North-South Expressway during last year's Hari Raya festive season.
Every year, about 5,000 enforcement officers are deployed nationwide, especially at "high-risk" locations.
Last year, about 10,000 express buses were on the road.
Rahman said his officers would be at bus stations, too, to check on the condition of express buses.
"We will check the brakes, tyres, lights, log books and others."
Meanwhile, Land Public and Transport Commission state operations and terminal licensing deputy manager Muhamad Shazli Mohamed Taib said the commission would issue 1,500 extra permits to cater to the festive season.
The applications for temporary permits will close on Aug 15.
