KUALA LUMPUR: All programmes are being put in place to make this Hari Raya an incident-free happy occasion for all.
The police will continue with their well-tested “Balik Kampung-Rumah Selamat” campaign and deploy 10,000 policemen to carry out various tasks, such as traffic control and crime prevention rounds during the festive season.
The Malaysian Civil Defence Department (JPAM) has also announced that it will deploy its men along roads with high accident rates nationwide to ensure traffic is smooth throughout the festive season.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar urged house owners leaving for long holidays to register with the police and the neighourhood residents associations.
He said house owners only had to register at the nearest police station for extra protection.
“We are doing everything possible to make sure nothing happens to your homes and valuables while you are away.
“The campaign, which started in 2001, has been very effective in safeguarding homes during festive seasons.
“We do this by combining efforts of the police with resident associations to set up patrols and checks on homes during the holidays,” he said, adding that the measure was for everyone, not just Muslims.
He announced recently that police were re-branding their 10-year-old Ops Sikap road safety campaign and would launch a new series on Monday.
He added that the new campaign was not only to ensure road safety but also to ease traffic congestion and make the balik kampung experience safer and less stressful.
JPAM public relations officer Adeli Hussin said the department had launched Ops Bantuan to assist in traffic woes from Aug 25 to 29, and Sept 1 to Sept 4.
“We will be sending out our emergency response vehicles, equipped with tyre jacks and tools, and first-aid kits,” he said, adding that the teams would be deployed along all federal and state roads with high accident rates.
He urged anyone experiencing traffic problems throughout the festive period to contact JPAM at 03-2687 1337 or 03-2687 1339.
