KANGAR: The Governor of Satun province, Sumeth C. Vanitkul, yesterday suggested a new location for the construction of a 4km tunnel linking Perlis and Satun.
He said the initial plan, which was to build the tunnel from Bukit Batu Puteh in Kuala Perlis to Satun province in southern Thailand, could not take place because of technical and environmental reasons.
He proposed that the tunnel now run from Bukit Ayer in Sungai Batu Pahat, Perlis, to Watanun Village in the Maung district in Satun.
Sumeth was speaking at a joint press conference with Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu.
He said the new location would avoid destroying the beach and the mangrove swamps which would have been the case with the original plan.
Isa, however, had other ideas.
He said it would be easier and cheaper to build a road on the hilly area of Kampung Syed Omar near Sungai Batu Pahat, adding that a technical committee would be set up to study both proposals.
Sumeth, accompanied by 30 Satun officials, including vice-governor Chusak Maneecha Wangkool, was here on a goodwill visit.
